Over 180 people including staff and students of Kabul University, representatives of national and international organizations and government Ministries came together today for a panel discussion to mark an exhibition of Steve McCurry’s powerful photographs at ACKU. With respect and tenderness, McCurry’s work beautifully displayed on the walls of the Centre renders ‘ordinary’ Afghans and Afghanistan extraordinary. Children and adults look back fearlessly at the photographer and the viewer.
This debate was jointly hosted by the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University and the Armanshahr Foundation on 03 September 2014 from 2:00 – 4:00pm. Ahmad Zia Rafat (Professor Faculty of Journalism, Kabul University), Massoud Hosseini (photograhpher/AP) and Sahraa Karimi (filmmaker) discussed McCurry’s particular perspective, and the different challenges facing Afghan photojournalists attempting to capture similar images. Sahraa Karimi explained Steve McCurry’s photography as a hidden intellectuality of a society: revealing through fine arts and photography the culture and real lives of the humans that are shown.
