{"id":1404,"date":"2013-09-05T05:06:35","date_gmt":"2013-09-05T05:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/?p=1404"},"modified":"2013-09-05T05:07:04","modified_gmt":"2013-09-05T05:07:04","slug":"chiles-judges-apologise-for-their-actions-after-coup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/2013\/09\/chiles-judges-apologise-for-their-actions-after-coup\/","title":{"rendered":"Chile&#8217;s judges apologise for their actions after coup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-23967816\"><strong>BBC<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1405\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/69655437_69655436.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1405\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1405\" alt=\"_69655437_69655436\" src=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/69655437_69655436-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/69655437_69655436-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/69655437_69655436.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 1973 military coup is still a divisive issue in Chile<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The body representing judges in Chile has made an unprecedented apology for the actions of its members under military rule in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>It a statement, it said that the judiciary at the time had abandoned its role as protector of basic rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The time has come to ask for the forgiveness of victims&#8230; and of Chilean society,&#8221; said the judges.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,000 people were killed under the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet between 1973 and 1990.<\/p>\n<p>The statement by the National Association of Magistrates of the Judiciary comes a week before the 40th anniversary of the coup that brought General Pinochet to power.<\/p>\n<p>It said its members, and in particular the Supreme Court, had failed in its duty to protect victims of state abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The magistrates&#8217; association acknowledged that the Chilean judiciary could and should have done much more to safeguard the rights of those persecuted by the dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>It said the judges had ignored the plight of victims who had demanded their intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Chilean courts rejected about 5,000 cases seeking help on locating missing loved ones abducted or killed by the authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Critics say their usual response was they had no information about their fate.<\/p>\n<p>Chile&#8217;s current centre-right government has said the country will officially recognise the anniversary of the coup.<\/p>\n<p>President Sebastian Pinera said last month that the coup on 11 September 1973 was &#8220;a historical fact&#8221; and its 40th anniversary should be a time of &#8220;reflection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came after the conservative senator and former president of the Independent Democratic Union, Hernan Larrain, apologised for his party&#8217;s actions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I ask for forgiveness,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is my voice for reconciliation.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BBC The body representing judges in Chile has made an unprecedented apology for the actions of its members under military rule in the 1970s and 1980s.
