This year, 4,000 girls graduated out of the total 18,000 graduates,\u201d said Mohammad Asif, a spokesperson for the department of education in Nangarhar.<\/p>\n<p>Asif added that girls constituted 45 percent of the 820,000 total students in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Girls are traditionally deprived of education in Afghanistan\u2019s remote areas and were not allowed to go to school when the Taliban was in power.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3A2F8158-AE6D-4F66-8551-FEE1F5934F3D_w650_r0_s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8534 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3A2F8158-AE6D-4F66-8551-FEE1F5934F3D_w650_r0_s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"729\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3A2F8158-AE6D-4F66-8551-FEE1F5934F3D_w650_r0_s.jpg 650w, https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3A2F8158-AE6D-4F66-8551-FEE1F5934F3D_w650_r0_s-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FILE &#8211; An Afghan policeman walks with school girls across the road in Herat, west of Kabul, Afghanistan, March 16, 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Decades-long conflict in the country has had negative effects on education, but there has been improvement in the last 15 years, with millions of students including girls, returning to school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urban and rural disparities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Analysts say more girls are attending school in urban areas than in rural parts of the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number has risen in urban centers but girls in several remote districts are still unable to attend school,\u201d said Malalai Shinwari, an advisor to President Ashraf Ghani and a civil society activist.<\/p>\n<p>Girls in many rural and remote regions are faced with multiple societal and security challenges, including lack of infrastructure for schools in certain areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no schools for girls in many areas in Nangarhar,\u201d Shinwari said. \u201cIn some areas girls are only able to attend home-based schools, which receive little support from the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many areas girls do not go to school because there is no school nearby,\u201d Haroon Rashid Sherzad, a civil society activist from Nangarhar and former deputy minister of narcotics, told VOA. \u201cHuge distances to the nearest schools discourage parents from sending their daughters to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Increasing security threats have also kept girls out of schools in many areas where educational institutions have been a soft target of terrorist groups.<\/p>\n<p>IS militants, who are active in several districts of Nangarhar, have shuttered classrooms, particularly for girls, in areas under their control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation in remote areas is worrisome. Militants\u2019 presence is a serious challenge to girls\u2019 education,\u201d Sherzad said.<\/p>\n<p>Another issue is the lack of female teachers, as many parents hesitate to send their daughters to school with male teachers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of qualified female teachers is a major obstacle to the girls\u2019 education in many districts as the socio-cultural pressure that girls be taught by female teachers limits girls\u2019 access to education,\u201d said Shinwari, who hails from Nangarhar\u2019s Achin district where IS has established a strong footprint for the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government should generate enough female teachers in rural and remote areas,\u201d the presidential advisor added, suggesting that the government should hire women teachers from nearby areas and arrange for their daily commute to schools. \u201cParents and local elders too should speak up for their girls\u2019 educational rights,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/C2ECA873-0C43-4456-8CB9-7AE0A403FB4C_w650_r0_s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8535 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/C2ECA873-0C43-4456-8CB9-7AE0A403FB4C_w650_r0_s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/C2ECA873-0C43-4456-8CB9-7AE0A403FB4C_w650_r0_s.jpg 650w, https:\/\/openasia.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/C2ECA873-0C43-4456-8CB9-7AE0A403FB4C_w650_r0_s-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>FILE &#8211; Afghan students attend class in a tent in Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, Dec. 16, 2015. Analysts say by targeting students and education centers, militants are aiming at the heart of the society.<\/h6>\n<p>The ratio of female teachers is still low in certain areas of the country.
