But they do, and with life-long consequences for the child involved. More than 200,000 children were married in the US over the last 15 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/200000-children-married-us-15-years-child-marriage-child-brides-new-jersey-chris-christie-a7830266.html\">Three 10-year-old girls and an 11-year-old boy were among the youngest\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/200000-children-married-us-15-years-child-marriage-child-brides-new-jersey-chris-christie-a7830266.html\">to wed<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/200000-children-married-us-15-years-child-marriage-child-brides-new-jersey-chris-christie-a7830266.html\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The true figure is likely to be much higher, as 10 states provided inadequate statistics to campaigning group\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unchainedatlast.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Unchained At Last<\/a>.\u00a0Even Afghanistan,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/world-report\/2017\/country-chapters\/afghanistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a country with a widespread problems from child marriage<\/a>, has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/comment\/afghanistan-florida-common-serious-child-marriage-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tougher laws than the US<\/a>: girls can marry at 15 or 16 with permission from their father or a judge.<br \/>\nIn Florida, the state with the highest rate of child marriage, a pregnant girl can marry at any age with the approval of a judge.<br \/>\nThis law is holding strong, despite its correlation with girls dropping out of school, sinking into poverty and a greater risk of domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p><em>A &#8216;child marriage&#8217; social experiment in Times Square sickened people:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"65 Year Old Man Marries 12 Year Old Girl! (Child Marriage Social Experiment)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KldFGgUTqKA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The laws may be unpopular, but they are stubborn.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/virginia-introduces-law-to-stop-12-year-old-girls-from-getting-married-a7119091.html\">Virginia passed a bill to end child marriage last year<\/a>, but an exception was added for emancipated minors as young as 16 &#8211;\u00a0although the devastating effects are no less strong.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.concordmonitor.com\/bill-on-whether-minors-can-marry-8581515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New Hampshire rejected a bill to increase the age of marriage to 18 in March<\/a>\u00a0out of concern for pregnant teenagers and young soldiers who wanted to marry.<\/p>\n<p>How can this keep happening? Well,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/new-jersey-chris-christie-child-marriage-ban-fails-religious-custom-a7735616.html\">&#8216;religious customs&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0a New Jersey governor&#8217;s excuse when he refused to ban child marriage in May.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is hard to grasp how legal loopholes still exist in America that allow minors to marry.
