The 39th FIDH Congress, meeting in Johannesburg (Republic of South Africa) from 25 to 27 August 2016, wishes to express its solidarity and its support with human rights defenders who, across the planet, are subjected to harassment, attacks, repression and criminalization for promoting human rights [1].

The 39th Congress of International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) elected Guissou Jahangiri as one of the new vice-presidents of the FIDH.

On this International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, FIDH and its member organisations call for an end to involuntary and enforced disappearances around the world, and for justice for victims and their families.

28 September 2015. The symbolic seizure of Kunduz by the Taliban in Northern Afghanistan surprised many observers; after weeks of fighting and the tragic loss of civilian lives, the Taliban withdrew. For sure, these events were a strong reminder that the Afghan conflict has no ended with the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001, far from it. A situation that explains to a great extent why the Afghan people are now extenuated and yearn for security and peace. But what is needed for this to happen?

Since the US-led military intervention in Afghanistan in 2001, foreign donors have invested heavily in education, building schools, supporting teacher training, and providing textbooks and other materials to schools across Afghanistan.
