Following an initial announcement published on 3 November 2017, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) submitted on 20 November 2017 her request to the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber III to open an investigation into the situation in Afghanistan.

After a decade-long preliminary examination, the ICC Prosecutor requested the opening of an investigation into the situation in Afghanistan. Our organisations welcome this decision allowing for impunity for int. crimes committed since May 2003 to be addressed.

The ICC Prosecutor has sought authorisation from the ICC Pre-Trial judges to open an investigation into crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by all parties in Afghanistan.
