Yesterday’s verdict of the South Cairo Criminal Court convicting 5 men to life imprisonment, and two men to 20 years imprisonment on charges of indecent assault with force constitutes a positive step towards ending impunity for such crimes.

The two men vying to be the next president of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, have pledged to protect women’s rights, which have in the past year become a political bargaining chip.
