Human Rights Week 2016 & Armanshahr’s 20th birthday

Armanshahr Foundation/OPEN ASIA, in collaboration with French Institute Afghanistan (IFA), organised several programmes to mark its 20th birthday during the Human Rights Week (4-7 2016), in Goharshad University and the IFA premises, where several progressive personalities of Afghanistan addressed the meetings. This year was the 4th successive year that Armanshahr and IFA were organising the Human Rights Week.

Opening Ceremony of the 4th edition of the “International Women’s Film Festival – Herat

Fourth edition of the “International Women’s Film Festival – Herat” officially opened at Gardens of Babur, in Kabul on Wednesday 19 October 2016 with participation of artists, filmmakers, officials of the national and international organisations and people from different walks of life. Armanshahr Foundation/OPEN ASIA and Roya Film House, founders of the festival, organise the festival annually.

28 September 2015. The symbolic seizure of Kunduz by the Taliban in Northern Afghanistan surprised many observers; after weeks of fighting and the tragic loss of civilian lives, the Taliban withdrew. For sure, these events were a strong reminder that the Afghan conflict has no ended with the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001, far from it. A situation that explains to a great extent why the Afghan people are now extenuated and yearn for security and peace. But what is needed for this to happen?

Afghanistan: End ‘Moral Crimes’ Charges, ‘Virginity’ Tests

(Kabul) – Afghanistan’s government should urgently act to end wrongful imprisonment and humiliating, scientifically invalid “virginity exams” of women and girls, Human Rights Watch said today. Despite a pledge from President Ashraf Ghani in a February 2016 letter to Human Rights Watch to “prevent the imprisonment of women accused of running away from their family,” Afghan police and prosecutors continue to engage in the abusive practice.

The ICC’s Planned Visit to Afghanistan: Crimes, capacities and the willingness to prosecute

A delegation from the International Criminal Court (ICC) is planning to visit Afghanistan in 2016, but the government has hesitated about receiving it. It has established an inter-ministerial committee to ensure the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the ICC, is finally translated into local languages and published in the official gazette so that the public can read it. That treaty was signed 13 years ago.
