A brief by Girls Not Brides. Child marriage is a critical issue in both crisis and stable contexts. In humanitarian settings (conflict, natural disasters and displacement), it highlights a number of initiatives.

It is hard to grasp how legal loopholes still exist in America that allow minors to marry. But they do, and with life-long consequences for the child involved. More than 200,000 children were married in the US over the last 15 years.

The minimum age of marriage, according to US law, is 18. There is a legal gray zone, however- every state allows marriages of children below 18 with parental or judicial consent.There is no legislation to raise the marriageable age bar or to ban child marriages in 38 states of the US.
